Description
Summary:The morphology, formation and hydrology of the Loosdrecht lakes, a system of shallow interconnected peat lakes in the central Netherlands, are described. The principal environmental problem was eutrophication. The history of the eutrophication of the system and a comparison with its former state are outlined. The AMOEBE graphical presentation technique for ecological assessment, devised in the The Netherlands for policy makers and environmental managers, was used to describe the system. Thirty-two ecological parameters including both biotic and abiotic features were adopted and quantified. There are 38 references.
