Summary: | Equiatomic powder mixtures of elemental nickel and titanium have bee processed by mechanical alloying and subsequent hot compaction. The as mechanically alloyed powders and the consolidated products have been characterised by metallography, calorimetry, X-ray diffraction, and hardness testing. The mechanical alloying process yields powders with a non-crystalline (amorphous) structure which, in turn, decompose into the intermetallic phases NiTi, NiTi sub 2 , Ni sub 3 Ti during consolidatino at high temperatures. Fully densified products were obtained by hot pressing in the temperature range 1173-1223K, resulting in fine grained ( < 0.5 mu m) microstructures and Vickers hardness values of approx 800 HV. |
