Summary:A computer program and procedure are developed for an accurate determination of the decarburization depth. The depth profile of two medium-carbon steels, 5160H and 6150H is determined. The type of decarburization is also evaluated by definition of the linear relationship between hardness and carbon content based on two carbon analyses. A near-surface carbon content and the core carbon content are ascertained which allow to define the slope and intercept of linear relationship.
