Description
Summary:Toughening mechanisms in a multi-phase alloy of nylon-6/poly (phenylene ether) /styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene copolymer (PA 6/PPE/SEBS) have been studied in connection with the role of each component by three point bending tests of a round notched bar under plane strain state. Toughness of the multi-phase alloy of PA 6 was improved by the relaxation of stress concentraion due to the decrease of yield stress and the release of strain constraint by the formation of voids with SEBS, although the addition of alone PPE to the PA 6 matrix resulted in brittle fracture. PPE acted as a compatibilizer between PA 6 and SEBS and as a reinforcing material in order to compensate the decrease of modulus due to the addition of SEBS.
