Description
Summary:The quality of kermazit, a porous clay-based filler used for mass production of large concrete blocks and panels in the building industry, largely depends on the use of different additives which increase swelling of the natural raw material. The possibility of using ground quartz sand and dolomite as powdering materials and electroplating sludge wastes as expansion agents in keramzit production was investigated. A moderately expandable, low-melting, hydromica-kaolinite clay from the Lukoml' deposit was used. Batches were prepared using electroplating sludge waste (contains 13% iron oxides and 28% CaO and MgO, which assist expansion) in amounts of 0.5.10 and 15%. Granules were obtained, whiteware either left unpowdered, or powdered with quartz sand of dolomite. Samples were heat treated up to 1140 C. The apparent and bulk density, swelling coefficient, compressive strength, and phase composition were determined. The optimum composition was obtained using 10% waste; this gave the maximum swelling coefficient. Quartz sand gave the highest swelling coefficient but a slightly lower strength compared with dolomite; both could be recommended as powdering agents.
