Influence of SiC whisker size on mechanical properties of reinforced alumina
The composites were fabricated by hot pressing at 1700 C under a pressure of 30 MPa for 30 min. A commercial alpha-alumina powder containing 0.5 wt% MgO was used as matrix in all composites. The mean particle size of alumina powder was 0.9 micron. The results from the mechanical behaviour tests are...

Summary: | The composites were fabricated by hot pressing at 1700 C under a pressure of 30 MPa for 30 min. A commercial alpha-alumina powder containing 0.5 wt% MgO was used as matrix in all composites. The mean particle size of alumina powder was 0.9 micron. The results from the mechanical behaviour tests are presented. The mechanical properties of the composites increased with increase in whisker diameter, and materials reinforced with large whiskers displayed strength and fracture toughness which are substantially higher than for unreinforced alumina matrix. 6 refs. |
