Description
Summary:Recent investigations using kinetic microhardness measurements in Sialon-based ceramics suggested that the nucleation of median cracks under the indenter can be registered using a contact microhardness tester. The purpose of this study was to investigate this theory using acoustic emission during indentation. The investigated material was a Sialon ceramic Y-Si-Al-O-N. The acoustic emission measurements during Vickers indentation and inflexions in Meyer's index plots proved that median cracks nucleate under the indenter at about 3 N. At loads above about 16 N these cracks propagate and visible radial cracks are evident at about 20 N. 9 refs.
