Summary: | For advanced ceramic materials to be useful as replacements for metallic materials in conventional engineering design applications, improvements in toughness are an immediate aim. Incorporation of carbon fibers into a SIALON matrix is a promising composite system combining a high strength, refractory matrix with a high strength, high modulus and low density reinforcement. The toughness of the composite then depends critically upon the details of the fiber matrix interface. |
