Summary: | An approach to the kinetic simulation of nonequilibrium processes in planetary atmospheres is described, and some simulation results are presented. Particular attention is given to nonequilibrium collisional processes in the atmospheres of planets and comets. The approach is especially effective for modeling the processes of interaction of incident short-wave radiation with the rarefied gas of upper planetary atmospheres, including photolysis, energetic electron impacts, and accompanying chemical reactions, as well as processes taking place in the transition zones of planetary and cometary gas envelopes. The underlying mathematical treatment is based on the stochastic approach to the numerical equivalent of the basic Boltzmann-type equation and specific algorithms for finding solutions through computer simulations.
