Description
Summary:Previous investigations have shown that the mechanical behavior of aluminized steel sheets are highly affected by variations in the thickness and hardness of the alloy layer. In this connection, some data on the mechanical properties and corrosion behavior of steel strips coated with Al and Al-Si alloys are presented. Due to the formation of Al-rich topcoat layers, the tensile yield and fracture strengths were reduced by 8% and 20%, respectively, and the ductility was reduced by 15%. Aluminizing low carbon steel in pure Al and Al-Si baths provided a coating with good corrosion resistance when tested in alkaline media with up to 9%NaCl. The corrosion rate was lower than that obtained for noncoated and for galvanized specimens.
