Summary: | In an attempt to provide X-ray opacity, together with good aesthetic properties and minimal effect upon the mechanical properties, it is considered that the use of an X-ray opaque copolymer would be the most satisfactory approach, as compatibility with PMMA would be expected to produce an optically clear glassy polymer. Presently, four monomers have been prepared and characterized. All the monomers could be thermally polymerized to give clear hard glasses that were intensely opaque. Upon polymerization, they could represent a new class of thermally stable iodinated polymer which are intensely X-ray opaque and can be processed both by dough moulding or thermal methods, providing versatility in fabrication techniques to produce hard X-ray opaque glassy polymers. |
