Summary: | The quality of chromite-periclase and periclase-chromite refractories produced in Russia for lining cement kilns is poor. "Second generation" periclase-spinel refractories are a very promising material for such linings; the charge contains coarse synthetic spinel grains which substantially improve refractory structure and properties, and the impurity content is low. A production technology for periclase-spinel refractories using domestic raw materials was developed. Brucite-containing rocks were shown to be suitable. Preliminary firing of brucite for preparing caustic magnesite; washing to remove CaO; preparation of a caustic magnesite/commercial Al2O3 charge; firing the charge to produce spinel; firing caustic magnesite to produce periclase; preparation of the periclase/spinel charge; pressing; and firing of articles are outlined. The composition and properties of the refractories obtained are shown, and indicate a higher ultimate compressive strength, temperature at beginning of deformation under load, and heat resistance compared with previous products. 3 refs. |
