Summary: | A series of highly crystalline beta-sialons prepared by SHS was characterised by powder XRD, 29Si and 27Al MAS NMR spectroscopy. NMR confirmed that SHS in an effective and convenient method for preparing beta-@close@ sialons and that the products are of high purity. The microdomain-type structure of the products (with general composition Si6-zAlzOzN8-z where z = 0.5-2.0) is very similar to that of beta-sialons prepared using conventional synthesis methods. However, their superior properties make SHS-derived beta-@close@ sialons more attractive for practical applications. 13 refs. |
