Orthodontic board certifications: Global perspectives, challenges, and evolving trends

•The Society of Orthodontic Specialty Certifying Boards is a facilitating committee of the World Federation of Orthodontists that works closely with national orthodontic boards certifying agencies and organizations to promote board certification.•The establishment of guidelines for orthodontic specialty certification could be beneficial to standardize orthodontic specialty board certification worldwide.•The Society of Orthodontic Specialty Certifying Boards suggests the use of the scenario-based clinical examination as the certifying instrument for orthodontic specialty certification.•The ability to standardize the testing instrument, that is, scenario-based clinical examination, makes an argument for its use worldwide. The Society of Orthodontic Specialty Certifying Boards aims to encourage the formation of new certifying orthodontic boards worldwide and stimulate existing orthodontic certifying boards to review and revise their certification process. The main goal of Society of Orthodontic Specialty Certifying Boards is to motivate more orthodontists to become board certified by demonstrating their skills through time to protect the public and the specialty from unqualified practitioners. This article identifies the existing barriers in board certification and suggests a scenario-based clinical examination.
