Summary:The microstructure, mechanical properties, fracture behaviour and toughening mechanisms of an Al2O3-ZrO2-SiCw composite were investigated. The Al2O3 matrix was toughened by both ZrO2 and SiCw, the mechanism being complex and dependent upon the interfacial strength and degree of t to m transformation of ZrO2. The SiCw and ZrO2 also improved the fracture strength of the material. The load-displacement curve was sawtoothed in shape, attributed to the repeated initiation and stopping of crack propagation by whiskers. A model of the toughening mechanisms for ZrO2 and SiCw is discussed. 16 refs.
