Summary:A new probe (Z)-3-((naphthalen-1-ylmethylene)amino)phenol has been synthesized by condensation reaction between 1-naphthaldehyde and 3-aminophenol for the fluorescent sensing of Ce 3+ by “on” mode and dichromate (Cr 2 O 7 2− ) by “off” mode. Metal ions—Ag + , Al 3+ , As 3+ , Ba 2+ , Ca 2+ , Cd 2+ , Ce 4+ , Co 2+ , Cr 3+ , Cr 6+ , Cu 2+ , Fe 2+ , Fe 3+ , Hg 2+ , K + , La + , Li + , Mg 2+ , Mn 2+ , Na + , Ni 2+ , Pb 2+ , Zn 2+ and anions Br − , C 2 O 4 2− , CH 3 COO − , Cl − , CO 3 2− , F − , H 2 PO 4 − , HCO 3 − , HF 2 − , HPO 4 2− , I − , MnO 4 − , NO 3 − , OH − , S 2− , S 2 O 3 2− , SCN − , SO 4 2− do not interfere. The limit of detection (LOD) for sensing Ce 3+ and Cr 2 O 7 2− ions are 1.286 × 10 –7  M and 6.425 × 10 –6  M, respectively.
