Cluster hardening in an aged Al-Cu-Mg alloy

A new interpretation of the origin of hardening in aged Al-Cu-Mg alloys is presented. In particular, it is suggested that the rapid hardening reaction in Al-1.1Cu-1.7Mg (at. pct) alloys aged at 150 C is due to the formation of pre-precipitate atomic co-clusters of Cu and Mg. Cluster hardening, which...

Description
Summary:A new interpretation of the origin of hardening in aged Al-Cu-Mg alloys is presented. In particular, it is suggested that the rapid hardening reaction in Al-1.1Cu-1.7Mg (at. pct) alloys aged at 150 C is due to the formation of pre-precipitate atomic co-clusters of Cu and Mg. Cluster hardening, which is due to the formation of subnanometer atomic clusters, may represent a new hardening mechanism applicable to a range of Al-Cu-Mg alloys. (AIAA)
