Description
Summary:The LRMF has undertaken a study in collaboration with the Sculptures Department of the Louvre on a unique collection of terracotta sculptures, traditionally dated from the 15th to the end of the 17th century. On the basis of the artists' technique, these sculptures can be differentiated into two categories: polychrome terracotta, with a painted surface giving the appearance of wooden or stone sculptures, and glazed terracotta, most of them traditionally attributed to the "bottega Della Robbia". Results obtained for the first part of the programme devoted to the polychrome terracotta are presented. The scope of the research is twofold: dating of the 27 sculptures by thermoluminescence (without any stylistic consideration), and characterisation of the chemical composition of the pastes. Resemblances between the sculptures, and their homogeneity and production technology, are considered. 3 refs.
