Description
Summary:January brought colder-than-normal conditions to much of northern and western Alaska. The remainder of the state had monthly average temperatures not far from normal, and a small area in south central Alaska was significantly milder than average. Precipitation was very heavy across parts of southeast Alaska, but most other areas were generally not too far from normal. In the Palmer and Wasilla areas, very strong winds January 1 through 3 produced extensive damage and knocked out electrical power to thousands of homes and business. During much of the windstorm, temperatures were in the -10 to -20°F range, creating extremely low wind chills. There was extended deep cold weather in parts of eastern Interior Alaska.
