Description
Summary:A theoretical characterization of a shear band as a surface of discontinuity is developed. For the one-dimensional problem of unidirectional shearing of a slab, expressions for the jump discontinuities across a possible shear band are derived. This provides a simplified formulation of the problem, which yields a pair of equations for the evolution of stress and temperature along the surface representing the shear band. Two illustrative examples are examined.
