Summary:Al-AlN composites have been fabricated by the squeeze casting process at the Technical University of Clausthal (Germany). A 2024 aluminum alloy with a preform made of AlN powder (ESK) was used. Preliminary microstructural observations were performed by SEM and TEM. Dense composites were obtained. They exhibit clean interfaces (with few porosity and a small amount of Al sub 2 Cu precipitates). Aluminum matrix and aluminum-aluminum nitride interfaces were characterized by HREM. The Vickers microhardness of the composites has a constant value in the AlN rich region and was found close to 300.
