Summary: | Construction lasers first appeared in 1967 when laser beams were introduced as a new approach to aligning pipe runs. Acceptance was initially hesitant owing to a widely held misconception that all lasers were dangerous. However, when it was realized that those used in surveying were perfectly safe if used correctly, they were quickly adopted because of their ability to save time, labour and materials. Since then, laser technology has constantly evolved and the latest instruments are considerably lighter, cheaper and more versatile than earlier models. This paper reviews the evolution of construction lasers, reports on their current application and considers future developments. |
