Summary: | The NL-200 Nicalon fibre surface exhibits periodic roughness all around its circumference, the mean depth of which decreases as the period decreases, possibly following a fractal law. The deepest roughness detectable is in the 70-100 nm range, while the smoothest is 1-4 nm, but several intermediate roughnesses may be found, depending on the observation scale. Longitudinally, the roughness of upper orders, which are associated with longitudinal striations, are missing, and only roughness depths below about 15-20 nm are found. Calculations concerned with the mechanical or tribological behaviour of composites should take into account the surface topology of the fibre used as reinforcement. 6 refs. |
