Description
Summary:The mechanical properties of mullite whisker preforms and mullite whisker/MAS glass composites were determined. Both the flexural strength and fracture toughness of the composites are considerably higher than those of monolithic polycrystalline cordierite (120 MPa and 1.5 MPa.m1/2, respectively) or mullite (258 MPa and 2.2 MPa.m1/2, respectively). SEM micrographs of the fracture surface of the mullite whisker/MAS glass composites reveal some features that correlate with the obtained flexural strength and fracture toughness values. Thus, certain debonding of mullite whiskers from the glass matrix favours a higher degree of crack deflection leading to the rough fracture surface. It can be assumed that both crack bridging and crack deflection by mullite whiskers control the fracture toughness of these types of composites. 14 refs.
