Summary:The interface between a SiC whisker and a magnesium alloy in a squeeze cast SiCw/AZ91 magnesium matrix composite with acid aluminum phosphate (Al(PO 3) 3) binder was studied by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Fine and discrete MgO particles adhering to SiC whiskers were observed, which were formed by reaction between the binder and molten Mg. Definite crystalline orientation relationships between MgO and SiC whiskers were observed at the interface.
