Summary: | Carbon fiber reinforced carbon (CFRC) composites reveal several outstanding features: high temperature strength, chemical inertness, thermal shock resistance, and compatibility to human tissue. Their microstructure depends on the type of constituent materials (carbon fiber, matrix precursor) and on processing parameters, mainly the heat treatment temperature (HTT). In the present study, the influence of HTT on the microstructure of unidirectional CFRC composites based on a phenolic matrix and two types of carbon fibers was pursued by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). This method can provide important and detailed information on relevant microstructural features which control important mechanical properties (e.g. strength and fracture behavior). |
