Mainly based in the clinic, he worked in reproductive medicine, taught medical genetics, and researched genetic sequences and their role in mediating gene expression. “Early intervention with penicillin and hydroxyurea has been shown to be lifesaving therapy, and where affected populations have implemented neonatal screening and early treatment programmes, child mortality from SCD has been largely overcome.
