Summary: | The recent development in manufacturing aluminum alloy foams has increased their potential application in light weight structural components, in energy absorption systems for automotive, railway, aerospace industry where weight reduction and protection from impacts are needed. Aluminum alloy foams have a wide plateau in the compressive stress-strain curve and the wider and higher plateau contributes to the increase of In this study, aluminum alloy foam samples have been produced by the powder metallurgical method. The process starts by mixing 6101 aluminum alloy powders with the spacing agent and the mixture is compacted into a dense, semi-finish product. The spacing agent evaporates during sintering and the density and cell size of aluminum alloy foams can be controlled by adjusting the amount and particle size of the spacing agent. The powder metallurgy production method makes it possible to produce complex aluminum alloy foam parts. Thus the possibility of utilizing aluminum alloy foams in structural components and energy absorption systems is improving. |
