Summary: | Derivatives of phenylurea, such as diuron, monuron and fenuron are widely used in agriculture as short term contact selective herbicides. They can persist in the soil and water supplies after application due to their chemical stability and low water solubility and may as a result enter the food chain. Some of their degradation products may also be more toxic. In this paper, the photocatalytic degradation of diuron in aqueous solution on the TiO\+v\2\-v\ layer of a batch mode plate reactor irradiated with ultraviolet sun-bed tubes was investigated. The reaction rate was found to be dependent on the diuron concentration and on the light intensity, but independent of the flow rate. A reaction mechanism is proposed based on the identification of primary and secondary products of the reaction. (Original abstract - amended) |
