Description
Summary:Guiding properties of optical fiber with Kerr‐like nonlinearity are studied numerically using the finite‐difference beam‐propagation method to solve the scalar‐wave equation. The nonlinear fiber is shown to support fields with longitudinally invariant radial distributions having a mean‐squared beam width less than that of the linear fiber mode. The double‐mode propagation is shown to be unstable, and tends to convert into single‐mode propagation after some distance from the input endface of the fiber. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
