Summary: | Laser cladding has become an accepted technique to improve the surface properties of materials subjected to corrosion, erosion or wear. This surfacing technique was able to modify the near surface composition and microstructure in order to improve the physico-chemical and mechanical properties of the outer part of the treated material. Due to these characteristics, laser cladding has been adopted to coat the surface of commercial titanium alloy substrates used in orthopaedical implants with a calcium phosphate layer in order to promote the growth of the bone when the implant is inserted in the body. Therefore, the main objective was to obtain a bioceramic coating having the inherent profits of the laser cladding technique. (Substrate material: Ti-64.) |
