Summary: | All of the metals used to construct vacuum chambers for accelerators and storage rings have been measured. They include aluminum, stainless steel 304, stainless steel 316, pure copper, some copper alloys, and coppper plated beam chamber samples. Chamber fabrication methods of extrusion, TIG welding and electron beam welding have been measured for comparison. Recent work has been concerned with methods of cleaning the chambers, since there are new requirements which mandate the use of environmentally safe and user friendly chemicals. Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) has commissioned a central cleaning facility that uses detergents and very mild acids to clean parts for UHV use. The main criterian for acceptance was the PSD measurement of aluminum, copper and stainless steel beam chambers cleaned at the facility. |
