An oxalate-peroxide complex used in the preparation of doped barium titanate

A method for preparing homogeneously doped BaTiO3 which can be used in non-linear dielectric devices is described. Ba and Ti salts were dissolved, mixed with H2O2, and added to a solution of ammonium oxalate, resulting in the formation of an insoluble peroxo-oxalate complex. The presence of oxalate...

Description
Summary:A method for preparing homogeneously doped BaTiO3 which can be used in non-linear dielectric devices is described. Ba and Ti salts were dissolved, mixed with H2O2, and added to a solution of ammonium oxalate, resulting in the formation of an insoluble peroxo-oxalate complex. The presence of oxalate ions and a high pH are necessary for the formation of a stoichiometric and sinterable powder after calcination. To characterise the structure of the precipitating complex its thermal decomposition was studied by XRD, d-TGA and FTIR. The precipitating complex was found to have the composition BaTi0.91Zr0.09O2(C2O4).2H2O. The calcined powder prepared by the peroxo-oxalate method contains no second phase, in contrast to powders prepared by the oxalate and peroxide methods. 14 refs.
