Summary: | SiO2 aerogels were nitrided by NH3 treatment at 700-1300 C. The amount of N incorporated in SiO2 aerogel depends on the final temperature of ammonolysis and on the time of heat treatment. The maximum amount of N introduced into the aerogel structure reached 33.1 wt%. The specific surface area of nitrided aerogels remains high and decreases with the temperature of ammonolysis and with N content. FTIR spectra of nitrided aerogels indicated that NH3 reacts with SiO2 aerogels to form compounds in which atoms of N are coordinated by three atoms of Si. Nitrided aerogels can be converted into dense homogeneous oxynitride glasses containing 8.4-13.0 wt% of N by heat treatment at 1600 C in vacuum or in N atmosphere. 14 refs. |
