Interfacial reactions between aluminum nitride reinforcement particles and aluminum alloys in Al-AlN metal matrix composites

Interfacial precipitation in Al-AlN composites and its influence on mechanical properties are examined. It is shown that Al alloys with 3% Mg content are not suitable in MMCs reinforced by AlN. Intermetallic precipitates Al2Cu or AlCu2Mg induce a brittle behaviour of composites based on a AlCu4Mg1 m...

Description
Summary:Interfacial precipitation in Al-AlN composites and its influence on mechanical properties are examined. It is shown that Al alloys with 3% Mg content are not suitable in MMCs reinforced by AlN. Intermetallic precipitates Al2Cu or AlCu2Mg induce a brittle behaviour of composites based on a AlCu4Mg1 matrix even after solution treatment at high temperature. A spinel interfacial precipitation is observed in AlMgSi0.5-AlN composite and only a slight change in the mechanical behaviour is observed after long term heat treatments. 16 refs.
