De-excitation mechanisms of BaLiF sub(3):Co super(2+) crystals

Summary: | The de-excitation mechanisms from the super(4)T sub(2)( super(4)F) level for a promising new vibronic laser material, BaLiF sub(3):Co super(2+) (emission centered at 1588 nm, FWHM identical with 426 nm), are reported. At low temperatures, the decay time is on average equal to 580 mu s, decreasing very rapidly above 80 K ( tau sub(RT) identical with 1 mu s). This decrease is due to multiphonon processes from the excited vibronic level super(4)T sub(2)( super(4)F) to the highly excited vibronic fundamental level super(4)T sub(1)( super(4)F) promoted by the vibrational modes E sub(g) and T sub(2g) of the BaLiF sub(3) crystal. The decay time dependence on the temperature was fitted according to the Mott-Seitz model, presenting a good agreement. The following parameters were determined: radiative lifetime, tau sub(R) identical with 580 mu s, nonradiative lifetime, tau sub(NR) identical with 0.17 mu s and activation energy, Delta E identical with 587 cm super(-1). |
