Description
Summary:In many coremaking processes sand is coated with the binder system components and blown into a mold. A catalyst vapor is then introduced through the sand/mold to harden the contained sand-binder mixtures instantly (gassing process). A final air purge then removes (purging process) residual catalyst from the hardened core. In evaluating factors affecting gassing and purging processes, it is necessary to consider the flow pattern in a porous medium condition. Due to the complexity of the core box the gas velocity in the porous medium (sand core) is not uniform. Under certain circumstances, fingering phenomena might appear instead of a stable displacement. The problem of this paper is to determine the circumstances when fingered displacement is more likely to develop.
