Summary:In recent years, environmental contaminants have been recognized as an area of concern for some crocodilian species (Brisbin et al. 1998). Publications in the scientific and popular literature have focused on organic chemicals as potential endocrine disruptors in reptiles, including the American alligator (Guillette and Crain 1996). A recent review suggested environmental contaminants affecting crocodilians may be grouped into three categories; organic chemicals, heavy metals, and radionuclides (Brisbin et al. 1998).
