Summary: | May 2022 was a variable month weatherwise across Alaska, with temperatures warmer than normal across western Alaska and in Southcentral, while much of the Brooks Range, Interior, and Panhandle were cooler than normal. Much of the state had below normal precipitation. May started off with unseasonably high snowpack in much of Interior Alaska and the Yukon Territory, leading to concerns for river flooding. River breakup was near to slightly later than the modern average on most of the big rivers of Alaska. On the Tanana River at Nenana, the ice went out on the evening of May 2. This was the latest breakup since 2013 but five days earlier than the pre-1970 average. |
