Amorphous precipitates in a crystalline matrix; precipitation of amorphous Si3N4 in α-Fe

It is for the first time demonstrated that precipitation out of a crystalline supersaturated solid solution can lead to development of small, amorphous second-phase particles. The amorphous precipitates of Si3N4 obtained by nitriding Fe-1.6 at. pct Si are due to a possibly low amorphous-crystalline...

Description
Summary:It is for the first time demonstrated that precipitation out of a crystalline supersaturated solid solution can lead to development of small, amorphous second-phase particles. The amorphous precipitates of Si3N4 obtained by nitriding Fe-1.6 at. pct Si are due to a possibly low amorphous-crystalline interface energy, implying a thermodynamic rather than kinetic origin.
