Description
Summary:Technology is becoming more complex and as new practices are derived, they are quickly replaced by even newer methods. In this environment, professions to which the public turns for advice are finding that a change is occurring in their relationships with customers/clients. The traditional building procurement system has been criticized for being unable to cope with the complexity and dynamic nature of the current construction industry. This article reports the results of a research project carried out in Botswana, one of the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) countries. Based on this study, it is argued that for most projects, the problem of balancing quality, cost, schedule, and utility is not the inability of the traditional building procurement system, rather it is partly due to the selection of appropriate project procurement systems. Based on these findings, we propose that appropriate project procurement systems need to be selected to balance project parameters within the SADC construction industry.
