Summary: | This paper is concerned with summarizing a systematic procedure for developing constitutive models for frictional, materials, e.g. cohesionless soils, sands and powders. The method is completely general, thermodynamic restrictions are introduced at the outset, and the various parameters are given physical interpretations. The distinction between stored and dissipated plastic energy is seen to be crucial to a proper understanding of the mechanics of such materials. The classical critical state models are special cases of these families of models. Examples of two-and three-dimensional models are discussed. |
