Description
Summary:The dynamics of reactive infiltration were experimentally determined by measuring the length of the infiltrated part of specimens. All porous preforms used in this study were fabricated by packing selected ceramic powders into quartz tubes. Infiltration was performed by direct immersion of the quartz tube containing the packed powder into a liquid metal in an argon or nitrogen atmosphere. After a selected time, the sample was removed from the alloy bath and air-cooled. The length of infiltration was determined by means of optical microscopy. The collected experimental data suggest that the length of infiltration linearly increases with the time and exponentially with the temperature of infiltration.
