Summary: | In late summer through early fall of 1994, 38 soundings of the layer of air overlying a suburban neighborhood of Lafayette, IN, were made, and surface ozone was measured near the tethersonde launch location. The underlying theory of the sounding measurements is outlined, along with the profile corrections, quality assurance, classification of profiles, profile normalization and evaluation, and evaluation of local photochemical influence and advective influence on O sub(3). Local oxidant maxima were observed for 63% of the profiles measured, most of which occurred in the afternoon and early evening. Local maxima occurred more frequently when the local surface winds were from the agricultural regions to the north of the neighborhood. Low-level maxima were related inversely to the local traffic activity, which suggested that nitric oxide emissions destroyed O sub(3) in the air immediately over the neighborhood. |
