Summary: | The implementation of two global surface descriptions in the physical‐optics synthesis of shaped reflector antennas is compared with a view toward reducing the computational effort involved in the minimization of an appropriate objective function. The versatile behavior of quintic pseudosplines, recently explored in geometrical‐optics syntheses, is now confronted with the well‐established adequacy of Jacobi polynomial‐sinusoidal expansions within the framework of a single offset reflector design for satellite communications. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
