Description
Summary:A mathematical formulation of the problem of determining the shape of an object whose density differs from the surrounding medium is a fundamental generic problem in applied geophysics, and methods have been developed to treat it. In the present paper some uniqueness theorems are established and a linearization approximation is formulated for a 2‐D case that assumes a particular form of the gravity gradient rather than an anomaly in the gravity itself. The 2‐D case has certain peculiarities, so the uniqueness proof does not carry over to the 3‐D case.
