description The mechanical properties of Ti-23Al-10Nb-3V-1Mo, with a microstructure optimized for room temperature ductility and strength, show strong indications of being environmentally sensitive, in much the same way as other transition metal aluminides. Chip formation during machining and microstructural pullout during polishing/grinding operations is strongly affected by the use of non-aqueous coolants. Evidence is presented that clearly shows an environmental effect on elongation to failure during uniaxial tensile loading and on K sub IC . Preliminary evidence also indicates that permanent deformation in this alloy may be due to microcracking or other anelastic processes, rather than true plastic deformation.
