Description
Summary:This item has been previously abstracted from original Russian. A study was made into the influence of oxygen on microhardness of titanium nitride coatings vapor deposited on a substrate of high speed tool steel type R18. Auger spectroscopy and x-ray spectrum microanalysis show that deposited layers consist of TiN sub x O sub z oxynitride of variable composition. Short-time pulsed heating of coated tools promotes redistribution of elements and formation of two zones. The outer zone is depleted with nitrogen and enriched with oxygen. Titanium oxide that is formed on heating serves as a barrier for oxygen and prevents its diffusion to the coatings interior. Short-time pulsed heating makes it possible to increase tool durability 1.5-2 times.
