Description
Summary:The overall climate pattern in August was similar to July, with generally cool and wet conditions across western and southwest Alaska, while the Panhandle and portions of the eastern Interior were warmer than normal. Preliminary National Centers for Environmental Information analysis put the statewide average temperature this month slightly higher than August 2021 and close to the long-term average. Northwest Alaska was the coolest area relative to normal. This contributed to Kotzebue having the coolest summer since 2006 and the first summer that the tempera' ture failed to reach 70 °F since 2000. On the warm side, Sitka had the mildest August since 2013 and Ketchikan had the mildest since 2016. The National Centers for Environmental Information ranked statewide rainfall as the tenth wettest August since 1925. Southcentral Alaska was especially wet. Homer recorded 5.98 inches of rain, breaking the record for wettest August that had stood for 83 years
