Summary: | Acute infection with hepatitis C virus (HCV) is a cause of severe acute hepatitis. Sexual transmission of acute HCV is uncommon, but risk is accentuated in individuals who engage in receptive anal sex. In acute HCV infection, testing by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) returns positive results, but results from tests of anti-HCV antibodies are typically negative for several weeks after exposure. Some public health laboratories allow for HCV PCR testing only if the anti-HCV antibody test result is positive, which can make diagnosing acute HCV infection challenging. |
